Week 2,3 and 4 !

The reason I am taking these three camps together is because I have worked with the same teacher so the approach to the students was the same, however kids and the content of the camps were different.

The second camp was Sports, where we had field trips to the pitch nearby the school and most of the students were boys, in this camp there were 2 students, brothers who had weak English and the younger one did not speak at all, there I told myself that I can observe them during these weeks and it was a different experience for me because almost all of the students are very fluent in English. But by mimicking and using hand gestures and asking him to repeat made a progress at the end of the camp. The content of the camp was mainly sports, where kids played different games, but the most favorite one was "longball" which is a Danish sports- described as a hybrid of baseball and cricket. I have noticed that every teacher has a different approach, Mrs.Rashmi, who was the head teacher of the camp is a very experienced teacher, who is open to share experience and encouraged me to try to carry activities.

The third camp was "Copenhagen explorers", where for 5 days we travelled different places in Copenhagen which were mostly- forests, beaches and parks. It is relly hard for one teacher to hold the field trips with 21 kids, but thanks to our teacher who always reminded kids how to behave in public. Also, the thing which was important is the routine, even if this is a summer camp, we had routines like morning meetings, snacks and especially end of the day feedback, which I think is very useful and important for kids to understand and what to expect the other day.

And the fourth camp was Space camp, where I had a chance to carry-out activities with kids. We had different activities for each day and for different age groups, we did paper mache planets, we have watched videos about space, we have made DIY rockets , we had experiments with the balls to show what is a crater, also we had activity to understand what is a constellation and made edible rocks at the end. This was one of the most fun and interactive camps, because children had different expectations, some of them came to the camp because they have chosen and they are interested in space, however there were kids whose parent signed them up to make them busy. So we had a tough job to please each student and to give them a chance to learn more.

I understood that CLIL-based activities are more fun and its easier for smaller kids to learn by content or activities, because when we gave them the "dry" information like fact-cards , most of the younger kids were not interested.

By the way, the brothers which knew a little English, made progress and they found native speaker friends, which impressed me, they were joking and enjoying conversations which each other, at the end of the camp they were so sad to leave back to Italy, I have realized that  summer camps should not always  be boring to teach kids English , they can learn a lot by interacting!
