ELT LESSON EXCERPTS

By chance, I discovered a YouTube channel called "Teacher Val." I've watched a few of his videos and found them to be very interesting; the way he teaches is very positive and understandable. He is, as far as I can tell, a Lithuanian primary school teacher in China who teaches English. I thought it is a great idea to share with you what I have liked.

Val's first day with Chinese first graders is shown in this video, and he proves that it does not have to be as embarrassing as I thought.

First, he teaches the class how to greet him by repeating after him, and he uses the presentation to help. Then he goes over the points that were written on the table for both girls and boys. He then checks to see if they understood what he was saying.

Furthermore, he introduces classroom rules with gestures and by speaking, as well as having written Chinese translations for the kids to better understand.

After introducing the rules, he begins introducing the alphabet letters by rhyming and saying the word and asking the class to repeat after him. Following that, he teaches some words and drills them with actions. After he says the words and the students demonstrate it through action, which is very enjoyable for the children, then vice versa. To keep the class focused, he introduces the countdown. Then does the same with new vocabulary, eliciting Chinese translations from students. He goes over all of the class materials at the end of the class.

Finally, he employs a variety of methods to keep the class engaged in the lesson. I was taken aback when he taught students so much in one lesson and kept students very engaged in it. After watching the video I taught how first lesson could be very funny, easy and effective at the same time. I think he loves the job he is doing! And it is very interesting to watch him doing it :)

The next video is a kindergarten teacher in Prague.

She starts the lesson with hello song and follows it with naming body parts and encouraging to show it, children look at each other and repeat, so she makes a quick warm-up and asks students to make a circle and introduces the topic. As I have noticed the topic was colors, however she introduced the topic a little confusing way because children seemed no to understand properly when she told them "what is your favorite color?" Children repeated mostly the same colors, I think she could firstly introduce the colors with some flashcards and then ask them this question. At the continuation of the lesson there were many activities made to remember the colors and one more teacher came for help, children were engaged but I think there could be some improvements on this class.

Overall the channel is showing different lessons with different children which could be useful to watch and get some tips for lesson planning activities.

Actually this is not a specific video but its a channel that I would recommend to beginner teachers, because I found it very informative and useful. So the channel is Oxford University Press ELT, which most of you know but I want to share my experience.

Firstly, I think that there are a lot of videos for all types of situation :) which is was very helpful for me. Here you can find activities for ESL classes, ice-breakers, methods of teaching skills and lots of more things.

You can watch experiences of different teachers and also listen to the experts and have tips from them to apply in our own classes. Sometimes there are streaming videos-webinars which can help us in our own classes to share the experience with others. There are million of ideas for games for every range of age.  Also what i liked there are some videos about lesson planning, which is a bit painful for me, so I recommend watching them or to find the needs of yours :) I hope it will be useful for you too. Enjoy !

Other 2 reflection I have already published separately.
