METHODOLOGY BOOK
This semester, I decided to read the Routledge handbook of teaching English to young learners. Because the book is over 560 pages long, I've decided to share my general impressions of it. This is, in my opinion, one of the most helpful books for the novice teacher in understanding young learners and their environment in the classroom. The book is divided into six sections that highlight key issues. It begins by framing 'macro issues' in young learner teaching, such as language policy and planning, debates about a critical period for language learning, and teacher education. The book then delves into issues specific to the YL classroom, such as classroom management, multilingualism, and differentiation. All of these are covered in depth, and the suggestions for additional reading are a welcome addition.
The third section was my favorite because it helped me understand some of the skills and how to teach them to young learners; the book, along with the classes we had this semester, were all interconnected. The chapter discussed the skills that should be taught as well as the methods for doing so.
The book aids in understanding the approaches for each child and how to entertain them using various methods. At the end of the book, it illustrates the differences between countries around the world.
